Amavubi fans torn over Tetteh’s resignation

Sellas Tetteh’s reign as Amavubi coach was statically calamitous; however his resignation has attracted interesting views from fans that the power brokers in Ferwafa and Ministry of Sports will need to put into consideration. The Ghanaian coach signed a two deal last year in February and was tasked to take the national side to their second appearance in Africa Nations’ Cup, as well as qualifying the U-23 side in the Maputo Games.However, the 54-year old failed in both assignments after picking up just 2 wins, three draws and 11 losses. Tetteh’s only achievement was guiding Amavubi to the CHAN championship, a tournament meant for only players playing in their domestic. Amavubi lost all their games.Fans booed the team off the field after last Saturday’s 0-5 demolition by Ivory Coast and the 0-3 thrashing by Benin in June. And not being able to withstand the pressure to deliver and the high expectations from the fans, Tetteh decided to thrown in the towel on Monday, Times Sport’s reporter Ostine Arinaitwe and photographer Timothy Kisambira went to streets of Kigali to get the views of the fans. Idrissa Nshaganyeintwari, a taxi tout on the Remera-Kigali route was clearly irritated when asked about Tetteh’s resignation. “I no longer waste my money going to stadium to watch Amavubi. I watch it on T.V or listen over the radio. Why should coaches keep being blamed while the top officials in Ferwafa remain blameless? In my eyes top Ferwafa officials should just resign and allow new people with new ideas to take of our football charge.” Businessman Laurent Rugerinyange thinks the U-17 World Cup squad should be promoted to the senior team and only maintain a few members of the senior squad to provide vital experience to the youngsters. “Tetteh should not have been allowed to resign. He is good at nurturing young talent as he demonstrated with winning the U-20 World Cup with his country. The U-17 players should have been promoted to the senior team so that Tetteh builds a team for the future.” Gabriel Ndahayo, a software technician based on Kimironko is adamant that the Ghanaian’s poor team selection was one of his major weaknesses and is right to resign. “We shouldn’t have lost the Burundi match in Bujumbura. He left Bokota [Labama] and Haruna [Niyonzima] on the bench and opted for his usual tactics of packing the midfield which backfired. I also don’t know whether he really motivated the players enough. I regretted the money I spent to travel to watch the team lose to Burundi.” Felix Sano, a senior 4 year student at St.Emmanuel Technical institute and Fabrice Habineza, a motorist concur that Tetteh did the right thing to throw in the towel.“I think he did not want to spoil his good C.V,”Sano said while Habineza said that the team needs a new local coach.
