EASTERN PROVINCE GATSIBO — A 26-year old man was last Sunday nearly killed when he was strangled by unknown assailants in Kabarore Sector. Jean Nkurunziza, a Genocide survivor resident of Kabeza cell in Gatsibo District, was reportedly attacked at 8:30 pm, while returning home from escorting his friends. By Monday, Nkuruziza was still in critical condition fighting for his life in Kiziguro Hospital. Sources said the assailants, still at large, used a rope to strangulate him. He is said to have raised the alarm which attracted neighbours who came to his rescue. Residents who talked to The New Times link the incident to ethnic ideology, coming just weeks before the country commemorates this year’s mourning week. But the Executive Secretary of Kabarore sector, Joseph Munyaburanga, said cases of Genocide ideology have not been common in the area; although he did not completely rule it out. We had never had these cases related to genocide ideologies in my sector. But we are going to investigate the matter further to see that we bring the culprits to justice, Munyaburanga said. As local leaders we are going to be more vigilant on security matters now that we are approaching this period of mourning; because this is a time when people are traumatized, he added.Ends
