Rwandan institutions of higher learning will today begin a two-day roundtable conference on how they can best contribute to the culture of civic responsibility, interdependence and prosperity. The theme of the conference, which will take place at Hotel Novotel Umubano in Kigali, is ‘The role of academia in building a culture of interdependence and prosperity.’ A statement from On The Frontier Group (OTF), an American consultancy firm, says the objective of the workshop is to lay groundwork for higher education to play a central role in developing active citizens capable of building and sustaining a strong civic culture. The roundtable will also serve to expand the country’s academic network to include institutions in both the United States and Europe, it said. Sondra Myers, a Senior Fellow for International, Civic and Cultural Projects at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, US, will facilitate the discussions. The event will bring together leaders in academia and economic development from the US and Europe. Central to the meeting will be the notion of interdependence, the statement says. The conference seeks to develop a culture of civic interdependence with due respect and fair treatment for people of all nationalities and ethnicities within nations and in the international arena.Ends
