Athletics federation meets to sort out rot

RWANDA athletics federation general assembly meets this morning to try to solve the chaos that has engulfed the federation for the last couple of years. The main issue for discussion will be the Rwf5 million unaccounted for during this year’s Kigali international marathon. The federation’s vice president Dieudonne Disi told Sunday Sport yesterday that members will decide and expose whoever is in wrong so as to bring an end to wrangles which has left the federation’s executive committee divided. “We hope to solve different issues that have been affecting the federation. I know the president has his own agenda but this is the time to be open to each other and save the sport,” Disi noted He confirmed that missing money will be the main topic for discussion on the agenda, but that there are so many other burning issues that need to be settled. The federation has been dysfunctional after the president Supt. Gerald Ntare locked the federation’s offices, sacked secretary general Constantine Twajamahoro and Treasurer Nadine Muterinkindi for alleged embezzling of federation funds. They are reported to have failed to account for Rwf5 millions meant for this year’s Kigali international marathon, which was held in May. Mid this week, the pair was summoned to the CID for investigation and they will again report there next week for further investigation. Today’s general assembly which been funded by the Rwanda Olympic Committee to a tune of Rwf500, 000 is set to be held at federation’s bureau located at Amahoro stadium in Remera. During the general assembly, the outcomes of the audit which was carried by an independent team set up by the National Olympic Committee to look into the chaos will be revealed. The federation has of the past been involved scandals of embezzlement of funds but this year’s issue has torn the federation apart. It is the battle between the president (Ntare) alongside his 2nd vice Louis Rurangirwa and the federation advisers Empimaque Nizeyimana and Jean Pierre Munyaburanga against SG Twajamahoro, Dieudonne Disi (1st vice president) and the treasurer, Muterinkindi.
