EASTERN PROVINCE GATSIBO — Close to 70 residents of Kabarore Sector, Gatsibo district, who were evicted from Gabiro Infant Military School land, will soon be compensated, officials said. The verification exercise of the list of people to be compensated has been approved by sector leaders, and it now waits to be endorsed by the district leaders. The screening exercise, normally involving local residents is intended to weed out false land claimants, and others who own land else where. Joseph Munyaburange, the Sector executive secretary, told The New Times, that residents have been instrumental in helping the land redistribution commission achieve its intended goal of allocating land to genuine beneficiaries. “Because residents are involved in the verification exercise, there is a lot of transparency and we have managed to eliminate dubious land claimants,” Munyaburange said. One John Kagabe, a resident, had reportedly duped authorities as one of the evictees from Gabiro Military School land, but was discovered through the screening exercise. The verification exercise is still underway in Rwimbogo and Ngarama sectors.
