UK’s Conservatives head for upcountry

Members of the Conservative party, yesterday, continued their countrywide activities working on several projects in the south and western province. A group of Conservative education volunteers who travelled to Rwanda to offer skills and knowledge to young people and teachers were in Huye District while the Umubano football volunteers spent a day in the Western Province coaching young people. The group of seven volunteers in education, led by Desmond Swayne MP, who is the parliamentary private secretary to the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, are working with three schools in Butare. They are part of the UK Conservatives Project Umubano which works in schools across the country each year. It is the fifth year that the Projects education volunteers have visited Rwanda to teach. According to the group’s spokesperson, they met with children from Gatagiru School for children with special educational needs. “The group will work with the Teacher Training College in Butare, working with young teachers to develop English skills. The Project is also working to build a school in Girubuntu, with all volunteers helping with construction work. Project Umubano footballers working with the Conservative project spent the day in Rubavu, Western Province, near the DRC border coaching new footballers. They are staying in one centre for the day, and working with children between the age of 10 & 14. On Wednesday morning, the projects cricketers inspected various sites for the proposed Christopher Shale Cricket Ground, in memory of Umubano volunteer Christopher who passed away in June. They also visited Kicukiro district, where they coached cricket to children at the Kagarama Secondary School. The business project worked with over 100 marketing consultants from the Rwandan Government, and representatives from 45 different handicraft businesses. Two volunteers also visited the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Trade and Industry. They discussed business packaging, which is the speciality of Umubano volunteer Andrew Knowles. Ends
