Following recent cabinet appointment of Alex Kanyankole as the director general of Rwanda’s Coffee Regulatory Body (OCIR Café), the Senate on Friday approved him. Kanyankole, who is a former director general of the tea marketing board (OCIR THE), replaces Etienne Bihogo, who has been at the helm of the institution for only three months. Senator Joseph Karemera, the chairman of the senatorial standing committee on political affairs, explained that Kanyankole’s experience in OCIR THE, makes him capable of bringing a positive change in OCIR Café. Kanyankole had made previous improvements in OCIR THE where about $25.6m, $33.4m and $36.6m was earned from exports in 2005, 2006 and 2007, respectively. However, senators said that by the time they went to meet Kanyankole, he had already assumed office which is contrary to the law. Senate president Dr. Vincent Biruta explained that the government had communicated about the issue. Ends
