Hearts don’t break, they simply crack

I don’t know who said love is blind but whoever did was pretty smart. We have all fallen in love at one point in our lives or at least we thought it was love. As teenagers we found ourselves falling in love more times than necessary because to us, even a walk in the park meant love. The second a boy smiled in our direction we automatically assumed he was in love with us. Love back then didn’t have to be about roses and candy or any of that stuff that women want, but a simple note would suffice. And then the so called love that this boy thought he felt would all be poured out on that tiny piece of paper using the weightiest words his dictionary could offer. But when this boy stopped writing those letters and even started avoiding us on the school campus, hearts would bleed! That was the time when we thought we would never be better and that life sucked and that we wanted to die and all that nonsense. We became ill and suffered what I can only remember as hysteria. And the entire school would know that a certain girl was love sick that was embarrassing! But we pulled through somehow and later in life when we bumped into this so called first love, wondered what in the world we were thinking! Now as adults, heartbreaks still come along but if our past has anything to do with it, we know how to deal with it without becoming couch potatoes and eating comforting food. We learned the hard way that boys would be boys and that our hearts would break more often than not. Who would’ve known that nowadays, if a man walks out on you all you have to do is shut the door: and quietly, lest he hears it creak as he tries to come back in! Yes, we learned that life doesn’t stop when a guy decides he doesn’t want to be a part of our life anymore. Why should anyone pull you down to the point where you think you can’t live without him? Of course you can: maybe you just don’t want to but I can assure you it’s more than possible. Tyler Perry’s ‘Why did I get married?’ talks about four couples who go on vacation every year to strengthen their relationships and ask themselves that one important question, why did I get married? Sheila, who is extremely obese, is married to Mike who also happens to be sleeping with Sheila’s best friend. Poor Sheila doesn’t suspect a thing till secrets are spilled one night at dinner leaving Sheila feeling helpless without Mike but not before she jams a bottle of Champagne on his bald head. Just like Sheila, many women feel they will be helpless without their men and that life has finally ended for them. Says who? Go for counseling if you have to, call up old friends to cheer you up a little then pull out that little black number you’ve been saving in your closet all those years, go out and have some fun with your girls. Look the best you have ever looked and just prove to yourself that life does go on. Yes, you feel bad that he left but that was his loss and someone else who sees the gem in you will surely come along. If it is any consolation to the hearts that are breaking out there, no one has ever died of a heartbreak so get yourself together and move on as best in life as you can. Remember, you only live once: life’s way too short to live it cocooned in your apartment wallowing over some guy who I can guarantee you is out there having the time of his life. rachelgaruka@yahoo.co.uk
