Red Cross inaugurates Genocide memorial centre

KACYIRU-Rwanda Red Cross (RRC) honoured their staff, volunteers and children killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi by inaugurating a memorial centre at its headquarters in Kacyiru. The centre displays the names of volunteers, neighbours, 21 employees and 24 children who lost their lives within and outside the premises. RRC Secretary General, Apollinaire Karamaga, said that the centre will help RRC to inform other employees and visitors about the country’s history. “For anyone visiting, it will be easy to learn about the effects of the Genocide to this country and this will help us avoid or fight against Genocide ideology,” Karamaga said. Later, RRC staff visited vulnerable children in Bumbogo Sector, Gasabo District where the organisation has constructed houses for them. RRC also launched a piggery project for children worth Rwf 8m. Jackline Uwamaria, one of the beneficiaries, expressed appreciation for the move and promised to lead others in working hard so as to benefit from the project. “We got the houses, we also have electricity and if we work hard, this project will help us to earn,” Uwamaria said. Gasabo District vice Mayor in charge of Economic Planning, Jean Claude Munara, presided over the event. Munara thanked RRC and encouraged the beneficiaries to utilize the project in fighting poverty to improve their lifestyle. “Our goal is now to make sure that water is connected here before end of the year,” he added.
