The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that over four million additional health workers are estimated to be required worldwide with one million needed for Africa alone. For too long we have watched this crisis unfold in front of our eyes. This is unacceptable, the Executive Director of Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA), Dr Francis Omaswa. He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the first ever global forum on health workers crisis at the Commonwealth Speke Hotel Muyonyo in Kampala on Monday. A WHO report indicates that sub-Saharan Africa faces the greatest challenge with only 3 percent of the world’s health workers yet it has 11 percent of the world’s population and 24 percent of the global burden of disease.Ends
