Are teen relationships worthwhile?

Lynette was one of the most popular girls in her school. She was in her senior three when she got involved in a relationship with Douglas, a senior five student. She had it all, beauty, brains and the money. Lynette had a clique and they called themselves ‘the famous six’, who were all in relationships. Lynette and Douglas did not spend time with others but themselves. The whole school got to know about their relationship. During class hours, she was always writing little lovey-dubby chits to him. Her grades gradually dropped.The two were punished time and again but that didn’t stop them from seeing each other. Like you probably predicted, Lynette got pregnant along the way. Douglas had to continue with school, moved on with a new girlfriend and Lynette had to struggle and fend for herself and the baby. She didn’t make use of her brains and worse still misused her beauty. She might have been an item of envy then because she seemed to have it all. Today, she is struggling because of the wrong choices and decisions she made. Her classmates, some of whom couldn’t come a micro inch close to her, are successful people today because they chose to concentrate on their education first. So many students start relating in high school. This usually has an adverse effect on their grades because they lose concentration and are always focused on the relationship. Little do most think that their very grades will be relevant in finding a job in the future and many such opportunities. “Most of the successful people today made good use of their teenage years. What you do in your daily routine determines your future. So if you indulge in relationships right now other than attending to what matters the most, then you are bound to regret in the near future,” says Jane Nyirabera, a 64-year-old mother of six. Research has shown that most high school relationships do not last even to University. At high school there is a lot that one can do to have fun and still concentrate at school for good grades. There is no better time in life to discover one’s talents and exploit their potential like the teenage years.
