SACCOs urged to offer agriculture loans

Gicumbi - The Governor of Northern Province, Aime Bosenibamwe, advised leaders in charge of the sector’s saving and credit scheme (Umurenge SACCO) to be transparent. He was officially opening a branch of the Umurenge SACCO in Mutete Sector in Gicumbi District. “You should advance the operations of the SACCO by being more open and render clean services. Concentrate more on giving loans to people with agricultural projects,” said Bosenibamwe. Mutete Umurenge SACCO has so far registered 3,894 members with Rwf6.1m as share holding fee. They have also accumulated over Rwf40 million in savings.The governor donated a computer and solar energy panels to the SACCO management to help them improve their services. Speaking to the area residents, the District’s Mayor, Bonane Nyangezi, encouraged them to join the Umurenge SACCO to uplift their lives. “Take advantage of these good programmes the government has set up for you, like banks and Umurenge SACCOs to improve your wellbeing,” Nyangezi said.Some residents, who spoke to The New Times, testified how credit facilities have changed their lives. “Through the loan I got from Umurenge SACCO, I bought larger plot of land for potato farming and my daily income has increased. Now I am able to provide fees for my three children,” revealed Odette Uwamahoro, a member of Mutete Umurenge SACCO. Ends
