Infertility Burden should not rest on women- Gynecologists

Rwanda Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RSOG) yesterday met to discuss management of infertility in the country. Medical specialists from Kenya and Rwanda conferred on the causes, cure and way forward in fighting against infertility in Rwanda. Dr. Nathalie Dhont, a researcher on infertility in Rwanda noted that most men desist from taking the blame for infertility. “We discovered that men never want to accept they can be infertile. Most of them never go for checkups incase their wives fail to get pregnant. They believe it is only women who can be infertile,” she said. During the conference which also doubled as the RSOG launch, Dr. Eugene Ngoga, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist at King Faisal Hospital mentioned that men hardly go for checkups or treatment for infertility. “Sometimes the women come for checkup and we find that the problem is actually not with them. The men can also be infertile but usually the blame is put on women. It’s advisable that both parties seek medical advice.” Dr. Ngonga advised. He mentioned that they are expecting a laboratory facility dubbed “InVitro Fertilization” this year .This will enable infertile couples to produce babies. He said that they have already drawn a budget and are now awaiting the facility. The Minister of Health, Dr. Agnes Binagwaho, who was the chief guest, stated that infertility rate in Rwanda had reduced. “The infertility rate should now be below 5.5% in Rwanda. We are going to work hand-in-hand with RSOG to guide the health sector especially in maternal health. We hope that they will be our technical advisors.” Ends
