Battling with the ‘Many’ Class Subjects

Chris complained to his mother that he was fed up of school. He just couldn’t cope with the many subjects that are not even vital for what he hopes will be his future career, a pilot. Chris deliberately dodged Agriculture, History, Commerce and Christian Education classes. The mother comforted him and understood his situation. She told him she didn’t have the authority to change the system. She advised her son to hang in there. So many students in Secondary School today, especially O’levels are complaining about the many subjects they are studying. Some of students complain that some of the subjects are apparently not even relevant to them. Well, students in Ordinary Level might not have much of a choice in the number of subjects they should do. In Countries like Uganda, some schools do have over 10 subjects at Ordinary level. Having many subjects shouldn’t be a big deal since others have been there, done it and succeeded.One should instead try to figure out how to go about the several subjects and be the best they can. “I draw a timetable every beginning of the term. This helps me divide my time well for each of the subjects. They might seem many but they are manageable as long handles their time well. Some subjects are not fun but if you have to revise and gain interest for the sake of good grades,” said Diana Karungi, a Senior Two student. Karungi does have a good way of batting with the many subjects which the rest of us should emulate. Having a time table helps one to manage their time well, allocate enough time for each subject hence leading to good grades. Consulting teachers is a behavior most students dread yet it is one way of getting good grades and dealing with the many subjects. It’s always good to talk to the teacher whenever you miss a point or don’t understand something in class. The teacher will take you as a serious student and will also be encouraged to help you more. Holding discussion groups with fellow classmates is also a good way to handle the numerous subjects. It’s advisable to make friends with the students that are always the best in class. This will help one to easily approach them for discussions and consulting where one has not understood. The friends you hang out with at school will have a big impact in your grades. If it is the crazy ones that don’t like to read, you are bound to have the bad grades because you also won’t be reading like your bad friends. Learn to love and accept all the subjects, consult teachers, join discussions, follow a timetable, read hard hang out with the right friends and the many subjects will cease to be!!!!!!! m.kaitesi@yahoo.com
