Technology is unlocking development challenges

With the advent of social media, various sectors have taken advantage of the technology to help achieve their goals. The use of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media have gone a long way in bringing not only communities together, but also leaders closer to the people. Today for instance, President Paul Kagame will feature on YouTube’s World View programme. People from all over the globe got to ask him questions which answers they will get during the broadcast. The advantages are immense, and the You Tube programme is just one example of how the technology can help demonstrate good governance. The government has invested a lot in ICT and it is up to the Rwandan people to apply it. The laying of the fiber optic cable, countrywide, is complete and with the necessary infrastructure in place the next step is to it to good use. Local government has embarked on a national campaign to train and sensitize the leaders at all levels about the advantages technology can bring to service delivery. And, farmers, in Rwanda today, can get access to market prices through the cell phones courtesy of the e-soko project. The advantages of ICT development are limitless and by embracing it in all forms, there is no doubt that challenges to development, good governance, and democracy will be unlocked. Ends
