On this week’s episode of The Long Form podcast, we press pause on foreign affairs to discuss something a bit closer to home – health and fitness. Last year, the health ministry revealed shocking numbers that 44 per cent of all the deaths in Rwanda were a result of non-communicable diseases, most of which are preventable. The diseases include diabetes, hypertension and cancer. Most people are aware that bad eating and drinking habits are the cause of such predicaments, and at the start of a new year, they promise to take better care of themselves which then translates to regular workouts at the gym. But the drive gradually drops and by this time of year, fewer people are honouring their commitment to the gym. Ivan Munye, a certified fitness instructor and owner of Cali Fitness gym, joins us to discuss the consequences that come from not breaking bad habits, the lifestyle trends that are worsening the situation, and the close correlation between fitness and health.
