Districts asked to pay teachers’ salary arrears

NORTHERN PROVINCE GICUMBI — The secretary general of the ministry of education, Narsis Musabeyezu has directed district authorities to pay teachers’ salary arrears. He was last Friday speaking during celebrations to mark the Education Day at Gicumbi stadium. Musabyeyezu said the government is committed to improving teachers’ social welfare. He urged teachers to love their profession, saying education is a tool of change. “The role of education is to model good governors seen at all levels of leadership in our country,” he said. All primary and secondary school teachers in the district attended the function. Speaking as the chief guest, the minister of Local Government, Protais Musoni hailed teachers for their tireless efforts in availing education to the Rwandan society. Musoni urged the teachers to teach Rwandans to be good citizens by desisting from spreading genocide ideology. “The future of Rwandans depends on teachers” said Musoni. The minister highlighted four main pillars for development which include teaching the culture of economic revolution, to possess self confidence that whatever one does bears success, innovativeness in discovering new economic ventures and to encourage the culture of competition. “You should work hard to discover new skills that are beneficial to the Rwandan society,” he added. During the same function, scores of students and schools were awarded various prizes for their outstanding performance in national examinations and sports activities. The prizes included certificates of merit, cattle and rabbits. Bwisigye Secondary School got one cow for emerging the best in football on national level in 2007, Rwesero Minor Seminary also received one cow for passing all students who sat for the 2005 National Examinations, while Groupe Scolaire de Salle got three cows for maintaining sanitation standards and environmental protection at the school. Also in attendance was the provincial Governor Boniface Rucagu, the district mayor Bonane Nyangezi, RDF 408 commander Brig. Gen. Eric Murokore, representatives of Rwanda National Police, heads of Higher Education Institutions in the district among others. As part of the celebrations, they played a football match between teachers and Gicumbi district employees, which ended in a one-one draw. Ends
