EASTERN PROVINCE RWAMAGANA — The best performing students in the recently concluded competition in languages were last week awarded scholastic materials. A total of 30 students were selected after passing exams in reading, writing and speaking in the three official languages-French, English and Kinyarwanda. At least 10 pupils were selected from primary, ordinary level and Advanced Level. The prizes included suit-cases, bed-sheets, notebooks, pens, pencils and other scholastic materials. Annual competitions in languages [French, English and Kinyarwanda] are organised by the Ministry of Education purposely to familiarize students with the languages, Daniel Karinganire, the district director of education said shortly after presiding over the award giving ceremony. During the function held at Rwamagana district hall, Karinganire further urged school head teachers to institute significant measures to improve education, saying it was a big challenge for the district to register poor results in the 2007 primary and ordinary level results. He said only 28.17 percent of primary pupils managed to attain the pass mark in last years’ national examinations in the district. The meeting resolved to train teachers on new teaching methods and examination format, the two reasons partly blamed for poor results. Karinganire warned head teachers against relaxing, but to closely monitor and periodically evaluate teachers and students. On genocide ideology in schools, Karinganire urged head teachers to set up unity and reconciliation clubs in their respective schools, and to encourage students’ participation in games and sports to weed out the vice.
