Beauty is attitude

Numerous times I have seen some women with lips painted in all genres of lipstick, their eyebrows extended with lines of dark colouring, their skins altered with skin-toning creams, heads clad in artificial wigs or weaves. What is so amusing is that in an effort to achieve “accepted beauty” these ladies end up with a wrong look. I know it is good to take great care of one’s appearance but one does not have to alter their bodies or skin to feel beautiful. I also know that society has set standards for beauty but this doesn’t mean we should conform to them without logical questioning. I believe each one of us can create their definitions of beauty, depending on what one values or cherishes. I want to make this clear; no one (not even society) has the moral authority to define beauty on your behalf. I am also confident that, there are some people who look in the mirror begin cursing, silently saying “Oh no! I wish my lips or nose was thinner.” But naturally we are all supposed to be comfortable in our skins, looking different is what makes us beautiful and unique. And who says one is only beautiful with a particular height, skin complexion, body size, nose shape et cetera. I am convinced that we are all beautiful or good looking in our own right, no one should impose on us particular definitions of beauty. One powerful quote by Roseanne says, “Beauty comes in all sizes, not just 5.” The dictionary definition of beauty is, “The quality attributed to whatever pleases or satisfies the senses or mind, colour, form, texture, proportion, rhythmic motion, tone, etc or by behavior and attitude.” Notice in the above definition that beautiful, doesn’t have to be tall, slim or light skinned. Beauty means, ‘satisfied or pleased by what you are or how you look.’ I have a totally different view regarding ideals of beauty, I don’t treasure outer beauty, I strongly believe that real beauty is buried underneath the skin, and that it is only reflected in ones character and deeds, ones beauty should only be measured by one’s possession of integrity, honesty, love, happiness, spirituality, purpose et cetera, but not only physical image. You are what you think, if you think you are beautiful (or handsome) or not, either way, you are right, so it’s up to you to choose to be beautiful or not. Ends
