The Government has fired 34 policemen over indiscipline, corruption, drunken behaviour and absconding, police spokesman Marcel Willy Higiro confirmed on Friday. Police officials say the officers failed to adhere to a zero tolerance for corruption principle espoused by Rwandan police. More than one hundred police officers were fired last year, including senior commanders, in a similar drive to root out poor conduct in the police force. Higiro said that among the fired policemen was, Manzi Ndahiriwe, who has been working in the interface department. Among those sacked, were none Commission Officers (NCOs), while the rest were constables. Those fired were from different parts of the country, Higiro added. Investigations to weed out corruption among police officers are ongoing. “Those police officers who are bribing people and taking bribes will be caught,” Chief Superintendent Felix Namuhoranye insisted. Namuhoranye said that inspection service of police would make every policeperson accountable. The service handles and settles complaints brought against the police.“It is a mechanism to ensure professional ethics,” said Namuhoranye.Ends
