EAC students’ union gets new leadership

The East African Community Students Union (EACSU) held its annual General Assembly and elected new leadership.EACSU is a union that brings together students from all East African higher institutions of learning. This year’s General Assembly, which took place in Dar- es -salaam, Tanzania, was conducted under the theme ‘The Youth participation in the making of the East African Federation.’ During the elections, George Yego from Kenya was elected the EACSU president. The top leadership of the union held on rotational basis. Every country elects local chapter committee headed by a vice president. This means that every member country has to elect a vice president and other committee members who work with the overall president. Yego replaced Festo Kiswaga of Tanzania. Alexandre Kayitsinga the INILAK Guild president was elected the new EACSU Vice president Rwanda chapter. The position was previously held by Mucyo Mulinzi a former Guild head of the School of Finance and Banking. Ignitius Ahimbisibwe, the Guild president RTUC was elected Secretary General EACSU Rwanda Chapter replacing Valentine Tuyishime of KIE. Rwanda won eight leadership positions in all. Speaking to The New Times upon return, Kayitsinga said that the new leadership would focus on promotion of cooperation between universities within member states. “We want to encourage team spirit among the five member states,” he said, adding that it is through this spirit that the countries will benefit from the integration. At the assembly, other developmental topics such as; harmonization of curriculums, tuition fees were discussed. They also discussed the role of the youth in decision making and their input towards the realization of the EAC Federation. Addressing the students at the meeting, Rwanda’s High Commissioner in Tanzania, Fatuma Ndangiza thanked the youth for their efforts in promoting the regional integration.“It is an honour to see the youth from my country taking the lead in making EAC a great block,” she said, adding that she has been closely following the union’s activities. “No one else will build East Africa other than you; take this opportunity to exercise your right to make decisions that will build this community. In future you will not blame anyone for failure because you are the leaders of today and tomorrow,” said the envoy. Ends
