Rwandans in Uganda to commemorate Genocide

Rwandans living in Uganda will next week join the rest of the world in commemorating the 17th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. This year’s theme is: Commemorating the Genocide against the Tutsi: Upholding the Truth; Preserving our Dignity. According to Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Frank Mugambage, the commemoration in Uganda will take place at the Lambu Memorial site in Masaka District. Lambu is one of the three sites where the bodies of the victims of the Genocide which were retrieved from Lake Victoria were buried. “Preparations are in high gear and we have already sent invitations to various people to join us in commemorating the 17th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi,” Mugambage said in an interview. He also said that the decision to take the event to Lambu, was a sign of appreciation to residents there for the role they played in retrieving hundreds of bodies. He added that ahead of the commemoration day, there will be lectures with the youth and students aimed at creating awareness and strengthening the ‘Never Again’ concept. Mugambage said that among those invited are officials from the Ugandan government, members of the public and the local communities living around the memorial site. “We are also expecting a delegation from Rwanda which will include officials from IBUKA,” he added. IBUKA is an umbrella organisation for Genocide survivors associations in Rwanda. Meanwhile, the Rwanda High Commission in Kenya will on April 7th hold the International Day of Reflection on Genocide in Rwanda to take place at the High Commission. Among other activities, the Rwandan mission, together with the Diaspora community, will participate in a lecture at the United States International University (USIU) as well as hold lectures with other universities.
