750 graduate at KISTKigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) held its ninth graduation, on Thursday, and conferred 750 students with various academic credentials. They were awarded Bachelors’ Degrees from the Faculties of Engineering and Science, Masters of Communications Management (MCM), Masters of Operational Communication (MOC) and Diploma in Technology. More than 30 percent of the graduates were women. The Minister of Education, Dr. Charles Murigande, thanked the new graduates for the hard work which saw them accomplish what they went to school to do. Fourteen students passed with first class degrees. Two Genocide suspects arrested in BelgiumReports from Brussels indicate that Belgian authorities, Tuesday morning, arrested two Rwandans accused of taking part in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Ernest Gakwaya, alias Camarade, and Emmanuel Nkunzuwimye, also known as Bomboko, were picked up from their residences, in the wee hours and taken into custody. Both were notorious members of the Interahamwe militia. “We have for years, been jointly working with Belgian investigators on these cases. The arrests do not come as a surprise, it was expected,” the Prosecutor General, Martin Ngoga said. According to survivors, Ernest Gakwaya, alias Camarade, is a notorious name in Nyamirambo, a popular Kigali suburb. As an ardent member of the Interahamwe 16 years ago, he left an indelible mark in the widespread killings during the Genocide. Border residents warned against smugglingThe Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana, Thursday met border residents of Cyanika and Kagogo sectors in Burera District, and warned them against smuggling and drug trafficking. Gasana urged residents to cooperate with the police, especially community policing committees, in ensuring that security prevails along the borders. Illegal drugs and smuggling rank high among the crimes along the border. Most of the goods originate from Uganda and DR Congo. Police offered Rwf200, 000 and a bull to the area cultural troupe, Uruyenzi, for using music and dance to promote developmental programmes. EAC discusses draft Protocol on Good Governance Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in the country for the 4th Session of the Second East African Legislative Assembly, mid this week, kicked off their activities, discussing the EAC draft Protocol on Good Governance. They will also discuss two other bills before they begin their session on March 29. The talks on these legislations are taking place in a three-day workshop between the regional lawmakers and other stakeholders in the region. Other bills to be covered in the workshop include the draft EAC Bill of Rights and the draft bill on conflict prevention and management.EALA is the legislative organ of the East African Community. Rwanda, Burundi in talks over EAC jobRwanda and Burundi are currently in negotiations over which country should be the first to take over the post of the East African Community Secretary General. This was confirmed, Tuesday, by the Minister for East African Community, Monique Mukaruliza. “We are in talks with Burundi about who should forward a candidate in the next term and the negotiations are promising, Burundi may allow us to provide the next secretary general” she said. The mandate of the current SG, Tanzanian Juma Mwapachu, will expire next month. Rwanda and Burundi acceded to the EAC Treaty on June 18, 2007 and became full members of the Community on July 1, 2007. Premier Makuza launches irrigation projects in the east Prime Minister Bernard Makuza, on Wednesday, launched the construction of irrigation projects in the Eastern Province. The launch was part of the ongoing Irrigation Week activities. The purpose of the Week is to mobilize local communities living around water bodies to use the resource to promote food security. The irrigation projects launched in Tabagwe and Rwempasha sectors will ensure constant supply of water from Muvumba River to the nearby rice marshlands throughout the year. Makuza also visited Nyagatare milk processing plant and the RDF maize farms at Gabiro before meeting Gatsibo opinion leaders. Ends
