On the afternoon of February 22, one could have assumed that The New Times female staff had decided to wear a school uniform that day. But that was not the case — young girls smartly clad in dark green skirts, white shirts, and a tie, paid the newsroom a visit. The vibrant students from Inyange Girls School of Sciences engaged in an organised tour of the newsroom, where they interacted with reporters and editors from the media house. The tour was organised as part of The New Times’ ongoing programme, in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), to train and nurture the youth from different secondary schools in various aspects. The programme which has been running for over three years includes phases such as communication, presentation, media and digital training, and writing. The media house has published many articles on different topics written by students from various schools as part of the programme. During the tour, the girls had their questions answered and some of them hope to pursue journalism after graduation, while others are certain that even if they do not take it as a career, writing will remain a passion.
