Rubavu to focus on improving welfare

Newly elected leaders of Rubavu District yesterday highlighted road construction and improvement of residents’ welfare among their priorities during their five-year termThe district, with support from the central government, plans to upgrade the road network in Rubavu and pave 10 kilometres of roads within the town centre. The leaders were meeting residents at Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu town, to thank them for giving them the mandate. Mayor Sheikh Hassan Bahame, hailed the community for exercising their voting rights which he said is a strong pillar of the country’s democratisation process. “We promised a lot during the election campaigns. Now is the time to deliver through improving living standards of the people,” said Bahame. The residents were challenged to work jointly with leadership and maintain daily communication which is paramount to information sharing. “During the meeting, we also wanted to share with them the resolutions that were reached at during the government retreat,” added Bahame.He cautioned residents against all activities that retard development. Encouraging residents to maintain peace and stability, the mayor expressed concern that both Rubavu and Rusizi districts were ranked as having a high crime rate. “Challenges that affect us include high numbers of idlers who cause insecurity, crimes such as murders, suicides and land wrangles among families and neighbours,” he added.Rubavu is also among the districts with the least people having medical insurance.
