Weekend resultsGicumbi 39-22 APRKIE 26-24 SFBUNR 25-19 Police BY JULIUS MBARAGAThe national handball federation has refused to declare Gicumbi as this year’s league champions. The Byumba based club wrapped up their league campaign in fine fashion after Sunday’s 39-22 victory over APR. The victory cemented Gicumbi’s two-point lead over arch-rivals and defending champions Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) who struggled to a 26-24 home victory over School of Finance and Banking (SFB). However, the federation officials insist that they are first looking into that fracas that transpired during the Gicumbi-KIE game early this month. According to the federation Secretary General Daniel Kwizera, KIE accuse the day’s match officials of unnecessarily prolonging the game. “KIE says that match officials unnecessarily prolonged the game during which time, Gicumbi managed to snatch a match-winning goal (25-24),” Kwizera narrated before adding that, “the federation is going to sit and look into the issue. We shall inform the public as soon as we have reached a stand.” Kwizera noted that if it’s deemed necessary, there could be a replay of that game otherwise Gicumbi will be crowned champions. If the decision goes in Gicumbi’s favor, they will become the first club to win the league on the debut season.Ends
