NORTHERN PROVINCE MUSANZE — Farmers in the province have begun to reap from the activities of terraces, made by genocide convicts sentenced to community service. After all the districts across the province employed genocide convicts sentenced to community work, [TIG] in making terraces, farmers have started to harvest high maize yields from the hills, which were previously redundant. While assessing the productivity and use of terraces in Gacaca and Remera sectors, in Musanze district, by a committee of senators in charge of economic development last week, farmers were applauded for maize growing. The senators, Antoine Mugesera and J. Baptiste Bizimana urged the farmers to always utilise the terraces, by using improved seeds and fertilisers to grow suitable crops along the hills. The Senators who held discussions with residents, on the value, use and benefits from the terraces to farmers, noted that terraces needed to be put to maximum use. According to the executive secretary of Remera sector, Augustin Kanyarukato, over 250 hectares of terraces have been made and are supporting the farmers in food production. Ends
