Valentine’s Day has come people! Hopefully everyone has put aside some money to make the most of it. As a man, of course I have to save myself a heart attack; so I made sure I buy a Valentine’s present as early as January for the future mother of my kids. Come Monday, my well wrapped love gift will be the first thing she sees in the morning. This will surely guarantee me joy, happiness and a quarrel-free next two months.If by chance she happens to surprise me and gives me something on Valentine’s Day, I will be the happiest man around town—not that I’m not happy now, I mean, her happiness is all that matters to me, not mine. So, why do women seem to believe that Valentine’s Day is their day of receiving treats from men? Is it so hard for them to release a few Rwandan francs and surprise their guy instead of waiting for him to turn up with wrapped things and dinner proposals? As a matter of fact, this should serve as a challenge to all the lovely ladies out there. This Valentine’s Day, don’t wait for the guy to ask you out; make hotel reservations as soon as you can, call him and invite him to a romantic dinner with you. As you sit on that table, just the two of you, pull out a beautiful watch, wallet or whatever you think he likes and present it to him. Just watch his reaction from there on. After that dinner, you will have learned at least three things. One; that perhaps you have never seen him glitter as much as he did when you gave him that gift. Two; that your stay together has been given a major shove upwards and three; that what you did is probably something no other girl in your community has ever tried. Many girls have a habit of treating Val’s Day as if it’s their birthday. They wait anxiously for the gentleman to give them expensive gifts. If what he gives is anything less than they had dreamt of, poor man is going to have to go through the next six months with breakup threats. What ladies forget is that; men love gifts as much as women do. Only that they will not boldly tell it to your face or send 100 texts reminding you that Val’s Day is fast approaching. It only takes a wonderful lady to realize that she does not always have to be on the receiving end. We live in a new era where; women work, women drive, women own big businesses and have toppled male dominion in any sector you can imagine. The only reason why women were on the receiving end in the past is because they were kind of marginalized in society-most of them had no choice but to rely on men for happiness. But now things have changed. It is absurd and laughable in this age, to find a fully employed career woman patiently waiting, year in and year out, for her boyfriend to give her Valentine presents or to make the decision on where they will have dinner on Valentine’s Day. mugishaivan@yahoo.com
