Rwandan students best in international exams

KIGALI - Rwandan students from Green Hills Academy were among those who performed highly in last year’s international baccalaureate and exams in both “A” and “O” level that were done worldwide. This was revealed yesterday during a ceremony at the school where best performers were issued their diplomas for “A” and international general certificate of education (IGCSE) for “O” level. According to Lucie Umulisa, the public relations officer and Director of Admission, 40 students sat for advanced level exams and 63 were from ordinary level “O”. Juliet Musabeyezu emerged the best in “A” level after scoring 39 points out of 45 as Krit Taneja was the best in “O” level. In an interview with Ron Wallace, head of the school, he said that their students were recognized among the best in the world after competing with schools in the USA, Britain and other countries. “We have found out that our students were ranked among the top performers in the world because they outcompeted some schools in USA, Britain, India, South Africa and others countries,” he said. The students excelled mostly in chemistry, physics, and mathematics, biology, English, French and history.However Madam Alpana Mukherjee who is the principal noted that they are intending to do away with the national programme since students are only interested in international programmes. “Students who are applying for international programmes are increasing and those on national are decreasing so we intend to scrap it. Maybe in 2012 we shall not be allowing national applications. But it’s not our intention as the administration, it’s students’ wish.” Meanwhile several international universities, among them Harvard and others from Germany, Canada, Malaysia and China have offered scholarships to the students.
