City roads to cost $30m

The ongoing construction and renovation of Kigali City roads is estimated to cost $30m which was obtained from the Chinese government as a long term loan to be serviced with a very low interest rate. This was revealed yesterday by the Minister of Infrastructure (MININFRA), Vincent Karega, during a press conference at the ministry’s offices. This comes amid criticism from some members of the public who said that the ongoing renovation is wastage of government funds, saying that some roads that are being repaired are still in good condition. According to the minister, almost all roads in Kigali were built in 1980’s and were thus old, requiring routine maintenance which used to cost government a lot. “It was due to this that we thought it would be important to give an overhaul to these roads to meet the required standards and cut down on the routine maintenance expenses,” revealed Karega. Meanwhile, the minister told the media that the Musanze road that had attracted complaints from the public, especially drivers, that it did not meet standards and was a possible cause of road accidents, was yet to be complete. “The road is still under construction, there is no need to start judging its standards. There are some areas that still need to be finished like the pavements, I would call upon drivers to be very careful and there will not be any problem once it’s completed,” said Karega. Ends
