Kigali wholesale market to cost Rwf17.9b

The proposed Kigali wholesale market is estimated to cost $30m (Rwf17.9 billion) and ten hectares at the Kigali Economic zone for the implementation of the project. Under the Ministry of Agriculture, the project is anticipated to boost the horticulture industry by reducing post harvest losses on fruits and vegetables. Post harvest losses account for 20 percent of the total losses on horticulture products. Jean Marie Vianney Munyaneza, the International Market Specialist at Rwanda Horticulture Development Authority (RHDA) said the project will also bridge the existing gap between producers and exporters. “The infrastructure will help eliminate middleman who reduce farmers’ margins and also reduce wastage of perishable foods such as vegetables and fruits,” Munyaneza said in an exclusive interview.sss The Kigali wholesale market project is a public-private sector initiative that also seeks to address market constraints through the construction of a modern market for fresh produce in Kigali city. The facility targets regional market and will meet proper food requirement, with small cold room and sorting area. Munyaneza said that the campaign to mobilise farmers to utilise the facility has started across the country.RHODA says that that after completion, three major collection centres will be established across the country, targeting areas that produce more fruits and vegetables in The centres will also be equipped with small cold rooms and sorting area as part of RHODA’s plans to diversify Rwanda’s horticulture industry by creating an enabling environment, hence attracting private operators.
