The Rwanda Peace Academy [RPA] will conduct an international course on “Understanding Conflict and Conflict Analysis” in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and King’s College London. The course is aimed at building the capacity of participants from Rwanda and 10 African countries, to better equip them to participate in peacebuilding initiatives as well as serve in International Peace Support Operations. The course will take place in Nyakinama, Musanze District from the 17th to 28th January. The programme will begin with an intensive Training of Trainers (ToT) course conducted by international instructors to build the capacity of Rwandan trainers to design and deliver courses from UNITAR’s specialised curriculum on peace support operations. This will be followed by a training course on “Understanding Conflict and Conflict Analysis” that will be attended by 25 local and international participants. At the end of the course, the participants will be able to synthesize the key elements of conflict analysis and how these can be integrated into the assessment of conflict dynamics needed for peace operation planning as well as other types of remedial peacebuilding initiatives. The Rwanda Peace Academy, a new initiative of the Government of Rwanda, supported by the Government of Japan through the United Nations Development Programme, aims to respond to the strong need for sustainable peacebuilding in Africa by offering training and research programs relevant to the conflict management challenges of the continent. This international course will mark the first in a series of capacity building programs by the Rwanda Peace Academy that will draw on Rwanda’s innovative peace building policies and practices at home, its significant contributions to international peace support operations abroad and will employ international best practice.
