Old Bachelor: The day I went to church

Though I am a Christian, I don’t really seem to be an avid church-man, but once in a while my evil deeds propel me to spare some time for Church. For the last couple of months, I had decided to give up the practice until one day I went to Church. But, it seems that the Church will not let me be. Thus goes the saying, “If Mohammed can not go to the mountain, the mountain will go to Mohammed”. There I was hanging around Butare University campus minding my business, when I came across a lady friend of mine. Trust me when I say this, she was not one of my ex-girlfriends, but she is what some people call ‘a mulokole’ (saved or born again); you can understand my lack of ‘long-term interest’ in this lady. You probably notice that I emphasize ‘long-term interest’ as opposed to ‘short term interest’. I define this as ‘being around a lady because she is as cute as a button and gives nice company as well’. As for this Christian lady, it was a classical case ‘short term interest!’ Chatting with her and making as many wise cracks as possible, she surprised me with a request that I could not turn down. “Walk me to Church it’s not that far”, she said, but she was not being exactly as truthful as a good Christian ought to. We finally got to the wooden structured Church with an earthen floor sprinkled with water; tiny tots were running about. Leading the prayers was probably one of the young Pastors. The music was not too bad. I was filled with a bit of the ‘spirit’ but my concentration was rudely interrupted by a slim fellow in a sweater who asked us to bend our heads. He then started prayers in a gravel voice without introduction. While this Pastor sounded like a Jamaican reggae artist, one fellow was speaking in tongues so confusing that I bet, even the good Lord Himself never understood a word. Another fellow was praying and making goat-like sounds! It was very funny. I once heard of being touched by the Holy Spirit, but this bunch of chaps acted like they had been touched by another kind of spirit. The Spirit of Uganda, a.k.a Waragi! Well, no one got hurt in all this excitement but I made a vow; “If this Church was that fun all the time, then I promise to be there this Sunday and the next…for a very long time!
