WFP earmarks Rwf 31.5m for Nyamagabe survivors

KIGALI - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced the release of Rwf 31,534,000 million to, among others, buy 50 cows for 1994 Genocide survivors belonging to Unity Club in Cyanika Sector, Nyamagabe District, in the Southern Province. WFP signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Unity Club and Rwanda Animal Resources Development Authority (RARDA),on Thursday, to start the procurement process. “The cow will help them to earn a living,” said Jan Delbaere, Deputy Country Director WFP Rwanda. WFP, at the same event, agreed to provide technical assistance to Unity Club worth Rwf 14,420600 to strengthen the capacity of its executive secretariat to effectively carry out its general mandate. Unity Club will identify the project beneficiaries, in collaboration with Nyamagabe District authorities, and put in place a system of project management through the creation of appropriate rural organizations, such as cooperatives. RARDA will prepare the targeted families by enhancing their personal and collective skill in animal management and husbandry, through hands-on training. It will also define the basic characteristics of the cows to be purchased and will provide a minimum of six months regular and sustained follow up of the cows. WFP also agreed to support the beneficiaries with basic equipment and drugs that will be required to ensure that the cows receive appropriate care. Ends
