How a person develops physically, mentally and socially is said to span their whole lifetime. The ability to believe in oneself is rooted in a person’s childhood. Self-confidence develops as we grow and our parents often play a crucial role in the development of our full potential. So, what kind of upbringing creates a person with the potential for success? Upbringing contributes to the development of individual’s self-esteem, confidence and positive or negative outlook. “Parents play a huge role in their children’s lives. Parents should always emphasize the need for their children to prepare for the future. Parents who place more emphasis on good sense instead of obedience are more likely to produce successful children,” said Betty Uwase, 34, a resident of Kanombe. Successful people are also more likely to have been given more parental attention when they were growing up. They were children whose parents talked to them and encouraged them to develop their skills and abilities. “Success does not happen overnight. Even genius children have parents who introduced, encouraged and supported their abilities. You cannot buy success from a store. It is something that requires the continuous investment of time and effort,” said James Karemera, a 52-year- old father living in Giporoso, Remera. Additionally, parents who give their children responsibilities and the space to discover their interests and talents are more likely to nurture children who succeed in their careers and in their family lives. These children usually grow up to be confident in their decision making and will not easily buckle down when faced with challenges.
