Sharing a faith depends on individuals. However, tolerance for your loved one’s beliefs should be a consideration most especially if you perceive their beliefs as dangerous, illegal or harmful to you. Mutual acceptance and respect is the most integral part of any marriage or relationship. If couples do not acknowledge these factors, then it is better they go separate ways. However, in situations where one partner suddenly changes their beliefs and there is no mutual understanding, it is advisable to involve a third party who acts as a moderator. Is it a problem if you are a Christian and your partner is Agnostic? Unfortunately, yes, because many couples have broken up because of such religious differences. When someone close to you holds beliefs that are radically different from yours, should this have an impact on a relationship? Dating someone who believes differently on matters such as the origin of the universe, one’s purpose of being on planet Earth, or the nature of God, can be a true learning opportunity. There is need to discuss ideas and beliefs that are close to your heart. This gives you the chance to deepen and strengthen your relationship or probably reveal things about yourself and your partner that keep you distant. Religion should not be reason for a break-up. When you start getting to know someone make sure they are aware of your religious preferences and that you can handle what they believe in. However, there are situations when a partner changes from their original beliefs and want to drag you into their new found beliefs. They put conditions or force you to follow their ways and when you do not, they use that as an excuse to break off their ties. It is not right for couples to use religion to manipulate each other. A relationship is based on several factors such as; love, affection, care, trust, integrity and honesty which are all wrapped up by communication. Tough times when handled well can build the spirit of trust and make a stronger relationship. However, without unconditional love, relationships fail—love conquers all. Dorau20@yahoo.co.uk
