Sudan appoints envoy to the EAC

KIGALI - The Sudanese Government has designated its Ambassador to Tanzania, Abdelbagi Kabeir, as the permanent representative to the East African Community (EAC). According to the statement released by the bloc’s secretariat, Kabeir presented his credentials to EAC Secretary General, Amb Juma Mwapachu. “Our vision is to talk about integration and unity and that is why I am here,” Kabeir is quoted in the statement. He added that his appointment was a manifestation of Sudan’s commitment to the region’s integration process and economic development. “Without closer ties with our neighbours, we shall not have a better future for the development of our countries and my government will in the future look at the possibility of becoming a member of the EAC,” he stressed. Mwapachu noted that although Sudan was not a member of the Community, it is a member of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) of which most EAC States are members. “Because of the geographical interface of Sudan and Kenya, we cooperate in areas of stopping insurgencies especially cattle rustling and the proliferation of small arms and light weapons”, he said. Countries that have already appointed representatives to the EAC include Brazil, USA, Denmark, Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo, Netherlands, Japan, Belgium, France, Canada, India. Ends
