Dear Editor, According to The New Times dated February 5, a Red Cross official warned residents in Gisenyi and those neighboring the Virunga Mountains to keep alert following Sunday’s earthquake. The weekend’s earthquake left close to 40 people dead and dozens admitted from the western districts of Rusizi and Nyamashekye in the former Cyangugu province. People were only asked stay calm and not alarm about the catastrophe. However, we should not forget that the same region experience an earthquake that was later followed by a volcanic eruption and therefore had all the reasons to fear. I suggest that the department of disaster preparedness in the Prime minister’s office works closely with the Observatoire Volcanologique de Goma (OVG), an organization responsible for monitoring of the two volcanoes in the Virunga- Nyiragongo to ensure safety of the people in case of any other future eruption.
