Thousands turn-up for Immunisation exercise

RUSIZI - The four-day mass immunisation of children against the six killer diseases that started on November 29, has registered a tremendous turn up in Rusizi district. The immunisation, which targeted pregnant women, and children below 16, was held at the five health centres in Rusizi district. “We are truly satisfied with the big turn up. However, the turn up for primary school children was average because they are on holiday,” said Dr. Theophile Dushime, the Director of Gihundwe Hospital. Dushime added that in the past, pupils would get immunised from their schools which wasn’t the case this time. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the low turnout of mothers who were supposed to pick mosquito nets from health centres, disclosing that they had to visit homes to distribute the bed nets. Community health mobilisers were credited for their participation during the immunisation exercise. “We aim at having healthy children and mothers; this is why we participated in the exercise on a daily basis,” said Yamini Nkurunziza, a community health mobiliser, in Kamashangi cell. The immunisation exercise was part of the mother and child health week. Ends
