Over 1,200 graduate from KIE The Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), held its sixth graduation ceremony, on Thursday, with a total of 1, 210 graduands conferred upon degrees, diplomas and certificates in various disciplines. The ceremony also saw students from Rukara and Kavumu Colleges of Education graduate for the first time since the establishment of the two institutions in 2008. The two colleges are affiliated to KIE. In his address, the State Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Dr. Mathias Harebamungu noted that many of the graduates from KIE, have ended up in other fields causing a gap that the government has been forced to fill by recruiting teachers from other countries. New travel ban for FDLR leaders The United Nations Security Council has imposed a worldwide travel ban and order to freeze the assets of three top leaders of FDLR - a rebel group operating in the jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) jungles. Those facing sanctions are Gaston Iyamuremye, Felicien Nsanzubukire, and Leodomir Mugaragu. Uganda extradites Genocide suspect The government of Uganda, on Wednesday, extradited to Rwanda a genocide fugitive who was arrested last month. Jean Pierre Kwitonda alias Kapalata was arrested by the Uganda police on November 4 in Lukaya, Masaka District following a red notice issued by Interpol Rwanda. Kwitonda was handed over by Charles Tumwesigye, from Interpol Directorate in Kampala. Tony Kulamba, head of Interpol Rwanda received the suspect at Gatuna border post. Kwitonda who fled the country in 1997 is charged with six counts, including Genocide, complicity in genocide and conspiracy to commit genocide. FDLR in Nuclear material deal A United Nations Investigative Report in the DRC has unearthed information that the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels posses large potions of the deadly uranium. The report released by UN investigators, this week, indicates that the FDLR rebels, mainly EX-FAR genocide forces, are stuck with hundred of kilograms of Uranium, a mineral used to make nuclear weapons, which they have failed to sell for the last 2 years. The minerals were found in 2008 in a hidden vault.MRND leaders’ trial adjourned The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) last week postponed to early next year the hearing of the case involving two former senior officials of MRND, the ruling party prior to the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The trial of the former party president Mathieus Ngirumpatse and his deputy Eduardo Karemera, will now take place in January next year. The two former MRND party officers are charged with seven counts including genocide, complicity to genocide, incitement to commit genocide and crimes against humanity. Rwanda extradites Ugandan suspects Two Ugandans, Simpson Mpirirwe and Didas Ndamiye, who were on September 4 arrested on Rwanda territory at Cyanika border, for involment in criminal activities , were this Wednesday extradited to their country. The handover took place at Gatuna border post in the presence of security officials from both countries. EASBRIG Members meet in Bujumbura The Minister of Defence, Gen James Kabarebe arrived in the Burundi capital, Bujumbura on Thursday for a one day meeting of the Eastern Africa Standby Brigade [EASBRIG] Council of Defence Ministers. The Council meeting was preceded by the meeting of the EASBRIG Chiefs of Defence Staff that took place from 1st – 2nd December 2010. The RDF Chief of Defence Staff Lt Gen Charles Kayonga attended the Chiefs of Defence meeting. EASBRIG is composed of 12 member states. Ends
