NORTHERN PROVINCE KINIGI — Girls in the country should stand up against any factors which may plung the country into violence, because the worst effects of war affect them, a Member of Parliament has said. Addressing students of Kanpanga Secondary School in Kinigi on Monday, MP Liberatha Kayitesi said girls in schools should always lead the fight against any sort of divisions ‘because the worst effects of wars affect them.’ She also urged girls to use their role as future mothers to tame extremism in society. Kayitesi and MP Gideon Kayinamula were on their campaign against genocide ideology in schools. The legislators noted that genocide ideology has its roots from families and the entire society in which the students live. To spread bad ideology, there must be a mechanism before such ideology perverts the mind of students. It should therefore be fought right from academic institutions,’’ said Kayinamula. The prevalence of genocide ideology in several schools across the country was revealed by the parliamentary report recently. Following the report, MPs have been visiting several schools across the country in an effort to contain the situation. Kayinamula said students should be taught the history of the country, how hatred was sown and its effects in order to involve students in shaping the country’s future. The MPs held discussion with teachers and students of 27 Secondary Schools in Musanze district. They asked teachers to occupy students with co-curricular activities during their free time, so as to mitigate negative discussions that may occupy students’ minds due to boredom.
