Fighting gender violence everyone`s responsibility - ActionAid

Rwandans have been advised to take personal responsibility in the fight against gender violence. Addressing the press at the commencement of the 16 Days of Activism against gender violence, ActionAid’s Country Director, Josephine Irene Uwamariya, said that the fight against gender violence is everyone’s responsibility. “Rights are not meant to be given by anybody. As soon as one is born, that person is entitled to his or her rights,” Uwamariya said. She explained that the fact that there is a decline in GBV cases does not mean it is over, saying there is still a lot to be done. According to Uwamariya, women not only still face physical violence, but are also affected psychologically.Initiated by the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991, the annual campaign falls on November 25 with the aim of coming up with strategies to eliminate all forms of violence against women. This is done through raising awareness amongst the population, demonstrating the solidarity of activists around the world as well as strengthening their local, regional and international works and among others. The event coincided with the NGOs launch of the Human Rights Based Approach Book, which will act as an international guide in countries where ActionAid operates. ActionAid International Director West and Central Africa, Tennyson Williams, said that the book addresses the real challenges that blocks women in enjoying their rights which has directly affected their economic life. “The guide mainly explores three areas which include empowering women economically, changing their mind set and advocacy on certain policies,” Tennyson said. The 16 Days of Activism against gender violence will cover events including, International Day for Women Rights Defenders Day, World Aids Day, International Day of Disabled Persons, Anniversary of the Montreal Massacres and the Human Rights Day that falls December 10.
