HUYE-The Governor of the Southern Province, Fidel Ndayisaba, has cautioned Local Defence Forces (LDF) personnel against indiscipline. He made the call on Monday during the closing ceremony of one-month training for local defence personnel from all over the province. The ceremony was also attended by, among others, Gen. Mubarak Muganga, the provincial army commander and Chief Superintendent, Faustin Ntirushwa, the provincial Police commander. 806 personnel completed the training in security drills, patriotism, job creation and the fight against corruption. Of the 859 local defence personnel who had registered for the training, 45 left before it ended while 8 others were arrested after they were allegedly being caught red-handed smoking marijuana. Ndayisaba strongly criticised such behaviour and called for discipline as the only way of effectively fulfilling their duties. “Someone who should arrest drug abusers is now becoming ther abuser. It is unbelievable. It is by chance that they have been caught, otherwise they would most likely become dangerous drug dealers,” he observed. The Governor further urged the group to be patriotic and work hard in order to improve their livelihoods and develop the country. He noted that every patriotic person needs to defend his country against anything that can threaten its security and the safety of its population and their property. The local defence personnel vowed to use the skills they got in keeping the security of the local community and improve their economic situation. “What we have learnt in terms of security and job creation is really enough. I will use these skills in, firstly, preserving the security at our villages and think of initiatives that can generate income for us and the entire community,” said Sylvère Bavugirije from Rugendabari sector, Muhanga District.
