Eighty-eight secondary school science teachers have enrolled in a capacity training workshop to improve their skills and knowledge in both theoretical and practical teaching methods. The training which will be held at Lyce de Kigali, from November 29 to December 9, is organised by Teacher Service Commission (TSC) and the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), as part of Strengthening of Mathematics and Science in Secondary Education Project (SMASSE Rwanda), a project sponsored by JICA. “SMASSE Rwanda seeks to play a vital role in strengthening partnerships between Japan and Rwanda through education empowerment,” a statement from JICA said. According to JICA, the teachers will initiate the programme’s implementation which targets to train over 1,400 teachers across the country, before the end of the year. “During the training the trainers will learn how to help mathematics and science teachers to effectively teach by capturing students’ ideas and understanding them by appropriate assessment,” the statement indicatedread. “Through a wide range of interactive trainings such as group work and laboratory experiments, the training will build teachers’ skills and knowledge in both theoretical and practical teaching methods to enforce the learner-centred environment,” it added. JICA stated that SMASSE falls under the Ministry of Education strategic framework aimed at enhancing education in science and mathematics as a way to advance the country’s development through a technology-based growth.
