S.A varsity awards 30 Rwandans with Masters’ Degrees

The University of Cape Town (UCT) based in South Africa on Monday conferred Masters’ Degrees in law to over 30 Rwandan students. A ceremony was organized in Kigali, on Monday evening, to honour the graduates, a function that also attracted Prof Evance Kalula, the Dean of Faculty of Law and in charge of internationalization and outreach at UCT. “On behalf of UCT, I would like to thank the government of Rwanda for investing in these students... the knowledge and skills they have acquired from UCT will enable them to work with other Rwandans to take the country to greater heights, especially in the justice sector,” Kalula said. The students were sponsored by the Students Financing Agency of Rwanda (SFAR), and they graduated in various departments of law including commerce, labour and environment among others. “Rwandan students who have today graduated are outstanding role models for the rest of Africa because they have been hard-working individuals and they academically excelled over their counterparts from other countries” he added. “The faculty of law at UCT is the most exhilarating place to work in. It may sound glib to say that we lead the field, but we do, and so you are not only receiving a Masters’ degree but one of the best Masters’ degrees around”. He added that UCT is the best ranked University in Africa and is among the top 200 universities in the world.Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Goffrey Kamukunde thanked SFAR and the government for having enabled them to study at such a university of high calibre. He expressed optimism that their acquired knowledge would be beneficial to all Rwandans. Prof Geoffrey Rugege, the Executive Director of Higher Education Council, commended UCT for the strong relationship with the government, saying that this will boost the education sector in the country. During the function, the students discussed modalities of forming an alumni association of Rwandans who attended UCT. Ends
