Rwandatel joins BPR’s ‘mobile banking’ scheme

Rwandatel subscribers have been saved from making regular visits to Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR) branches and can now make money transactions anytime of the day, anywhere with BPR’s Mobile Banking service. This comes after the leading bank, by branch network, signed a partnership deal with Rwandatel to facilitate their customers access their BPR accounts. First of its kind in the country, BPR’s Mobile Banking service helps customers conduct banking transactions via their mobile phone handsets, once they subscribe to the latest technology. “We have so far registered about 30,000 users and 50,000 transactions per week, ever since we launched the service six weeks ago,” said BPR’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Herman Klaassen. He added that the bank is planning to launch a bulky payment service by the end of every three month to allow institutions pay their employees using the service. The move will reduce institutions’ workloads of processing salaries, as well as helping workers receive their salaries quickly. The country’s other telecom companies, MTN and Tigo, already have the same partnership with BPR. BPR management says they have over 40 branches automated on one network, adding that they are determined to reach all the 1.2 million clients they have now out of the 600,000 that are connected to the 40 branches. “This is a convenient away of carrying out any money related transaction, where Rwandatel also benefit in a way of selling airtime to its clients,” explained Rwandatel’s Chief Commercial officer, Francis Egbuson. Egbuson added that it is a key product which will help people not to queue up at banks and service centres, as it is also another complementary service to our new M-Kash which is set to be launched mid-December.
