Junior Wasps to camp in Tunisia

THE national football U-17 side, Junior Wasps will continue their build-up to next year’s Africa Junior Championship with a three-week training camp in Tunisia. Ferwafa’s Chief Executive Officer Jules Kalisa revealed to Times Sport yesterday that the youngsters will leave for Tunis on November 15 and return on December 5. “During the three-week camp, the team will play several friendly games with some of Tunisia’s top youth sides,” Kalisa said. “Since Tunisia is expected to compete in the Africa Junior Championship, it’s good opportunity for the team to get a glimpse of what to expect next year.” The team was initially set to camp in France but Coach Richard Tardy was forced to look elsewhere because of the winter conditions which are not ideal for the youngsters. The team put in a commendable performance in the just concluded Cecafa U-20 youth championships. Playing against much more experienced opposition, the team still managed to finish fourth after their 0-1 defeat in a third place play-off against Kenya. For Tardy, the tournament was a good eye opener for the youngsters. “In Ghana, we lost 1-5 to the Ghana Under-17 side and 2-5 against the Junior Liberty side partly because most of the boys were new to the whole idea of international football,” the French tactician said at the time. “But this tournament has given them some vital experience and confidence,” he added. Uganda’s Hippos retained the regional title after a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over hosts Eritrea following a 1-all draw in normal time. Ends
