ICTR yet to transfer cases to Rwanda

The Spokesperson and Senior Legal Adviser for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Roland Amoussouga, yesterday said that no decision has been made on the issue of transferring cases to Rwanda. Rwanda remains the sole country interested and has the required infrastructure to try the cases that will spill over once the UN tribunal winds up its activities. Addressing a news conference in Kigali, Amoussouga noted that: “With respect to the transfer of cases to Rwanda, we have not yet made a decision as to which case should be transferred to Rwanda because it is the prosecutor to make an application before the judges and get judges to agree with his position authorizing any such transfer.” “We do not know when the prosecutor will file an application, but we are still waiting. But the prosecutor is on record saying that he is about to file, or he will file application, after the failed application that he filed last year,” he noted. A visiting top ICTR delegation including the Registrar of ICTR, Adama Dieng, has been in Rwanda attending a training session designed for members of the Rwandan judiciary in Musanze. The training which ended yesterday aims to help to strengthen the area of witness protection and familiarize themselves with the ICTR witness protection programme.About 40 members of the judiciary took part.
