Residents start livestock insurance fund

NGORORERO - Local leaders and residents of Nyange sector, Ngororero district have agreed to set up a livestock insurance fund in part to help poor residents treat livestock diseases. Innocent Mbagimbere, the sector executive secretary, disclosed this during a sector Joint Action Forum (JAF) meeting held at the sector offices, last week. “Each resident will be required to pay only Rwf2000 per animal annually. This will help the residents to address the current problem of treating animals in the sector and they will have full rights to access veterinary services,” Mbagimbere said. Mbagimbere disclosed that many residents own livestock and the sector plans to give out more cows to each family. At least 810 families still lack livestock. 4420 cows have been distributed amongst residents, with the help of the Support Project for Agricultural Transformation Strategic Plan (PAPSTA). Emile Rurangwa, the PAPSTA coordinator, appealed to the sector to step up development efforts by empowering families. “PAPSTA will support the initiative through training families in modern agriculture practices while re-enforcing the capacities of cooperatives and soliciting markets for Nyange products,” Rurangwa, disclosed. The district’s vice Mayor for Economic affairs Emmanuel Mpazimpaka who chaired the meeting encouraged residents to boost agricultural production despite the declining amounts of rainfall in the area. The residents also pointed out the need to fight poverty to reduce donor dependency, and installation of power lines so as to propel the development of the sector. Ends
