The Rwanda Red Cross Society (RRCS) has embarked on risk reduction campaign in all the 30 districts of the country. This was revealed on Friday by Dr Bernard Nzigiye, the President of RRCS during a meeting with their stakeholders at their headquarters in Kacyiru. “As an auxiliary to the public authorities and a complement to government programmes, RRCS has initiated two approaches which include performance contracts and community risk reduction aimed at empowering the communities for self-reliance,” Dr Nzigiye said. He said that the philosophy behind these programmes is to empower local committees and volunteers to be able to respond to situations of vulnerability as best as they can, depending on the available resources at their disposal in case of major incidences. Nzigiye noted that the community risk reduction approach has been a response to the need to allocate the limited resources to a minimum of core activities within their respective working places. He revealed that the strategy aims to promote social transformation in communities by concentrating on resources and efforts within the most affected selected villages to reduce vulnerabilities. Ends
